What's Culturing You?

Updated: Oct 11, 2019

I define culture as a collaboration of morals, traditions and values within a set race, in addition to other factors such as clothing, music and food. I identify with African American culture the best.

There are so many influences associated within my culture, such as the numerous amount of black entertainers such as Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Beyonce, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Little Richard, Richard Pryor, Missy Elliott and the list goes on. Outside of the entertainment industry - African American models such as Tyra Banks, Tyson Beckford and Naomi Campbell have left their mark - enough for my culture to idolize some of the names listed above.

Let’s talk about dance for a second, and the huge impact that Africa has on the dance communities around the world. Africa is best known for it’s soul-felt drums, that pair perfectly with the rhythmic, some times full-out body movements of dancers in Africa. Beyonce actually sought out dancers from Africa, to not only star in her music video “Run The World (Girls)”, but also to help choreograph parts of the opening sequence. This is a tell tale sign that, African cultures can be felt and heard around the world. Before Beyonce discovered the guys on YouTube, the world would’ve never known who they were, nor seen their talents on such a big scale.

At this time, there are no other cultures that I identify with. However, I have always been open to other cultures and diversity. Whether learning french at a young age, or taking two years of Spanish in high school, I love learning about other cultures and influences.

My culture is reflected in my daily life by the clothes I wear, TV shows that I watch, even down to the music that I listen too. One thing is for sure, I am confident in who I am as a person and while I am open to other ideas - I am not easily influenced, unless it fits within my moral and ethical guidelines.
